Top Freelance Web Design Sites

If you are a freelance web designer, developer, graphic artist, or outsourcing service provider, there are a wide range of sites available on the web to connect with other people to build new business. We take a look at some of the best of these that should be on your short list, and review some of the pros and cons of each. Freelancers should make one site that they feel most comfortable with their base of operations, building accounts and feedback on the site for core business, while keeping aware of the new posts and new projects being offered on others to catch the ones that are most relevant to their area of specialization.

The competition on freelance websites is strong among service providers, and the rates can be quite low when set in an international context. Developers may find it valuable to build a support team through these sites as well when the work load becomes too heavy. The sites vary as to whether they require a paid membership and what commission they take from service providers and buyers. Smart management and attention to details will help you reduce your costs, but as always – caveat emptor. Make sure you test providers by giving a small project to complete before diving into a large project. You’ll want to confirm the working relationship, communication, and production quality before making any large commitments or site changes.

1. odesk.com

Without a doubt the best freelance site on the web today. From the number of jobs listed and the quality of development projects, to the innovative billing, collaboration, and work monitoring options, oDesk is recommended for developers and service buyers for any project.

2. getafreelancer.com

GAF, or getafreelancer.com, has one of the most active user communities for freelance project development. The quality of projects isn’t always great here, but the volume of bidding and the prices are low. Recently opened a Euro branch of the site, so may split business between the two, weakening overall brand and community.

3. elance.com

eLance is owned by eBay and as such attracts a fair number of high quality project listings, and a lot of freelancers are doing really well here. However, their subscription fees for connects have you basically paying for every bid you make on site, and extra fees for extra categories, etc. Worth it if you take the time to build a presence on site and manage it like your eBay store.

4. rentacoder.com

RentACoder doesn’t have the best design, but gets a lot of project traffic and has a lot of options. The user interface is somewhat counter-intuitive and intrusive, but the site boasts the largest number of completed software development projects of any of the freelance boards and some good projects do come through the vine here.

5. getacoder.com

GetACoder is a nice site, and some good projects seem to come through here on occasion, but it also has a site marketing campaign that makes it feel as if you are working on a ClickBank site. Overall, a mixed bag but worth watching for occasional gems.

5. scriptlance.com

Scriptlance is a good place for programming projects and finding web developers, a middle of the road site with about 200 new projects a day. Domain name and traffic are excellent, so expect this site to grow and improve over time. Still one of the main boards to watch for new jobs.

7. guru.com

Guru should be a much better site for freelance than it is currently, with a great domain and design. But doesn’t get much traffic, and costly for freelancers for a yearly account. Good to monitor and you may get a top quality contract from the site with a lot of activity, but not really much business here generally.

8. serebra.com

One of the newest of the main freelance sites, launched with a large PPC ad campaign to bring traffic, but Canada specific interest makes it kind of limited overall. Big budget, promotions, and a lot of hype – may turn out to be a good place to network for big contracts. Nice site design overall.

9. sologig.com

Sologig is another underperforming freelance site, worth watching and building a presence on for the reference or occasional contract, but not to be expected to provide steady work. Maybe a good place for consultants to meet up with corporations seeking specialists, should become better over time.

10. Sourceforge Marketplace

Sourceforge being the main development repository for so many Open Source projects really should be a natural place to find programmers. The Marketplace isn’t as developed or active as it could be, but a good place to network your services and find new clients.

Best Freelance Market Place

One of the most valuable tools a freelancer can find these days is a good freelance marketplace site. Many successful freelances that were able to quit their daytime jobs to work as full time freelances have build their client portfolio from such sites. A few years ago there were not so many, but now you can find an ever increasing list of such sites that are trying to make their name into the business.

Even if we are freelancers we are very busy persons (probably even more than regular employees that have their job secured, and not work on the project), and in such a huge amount of resources a newone can waste a lot of time (on searching, bidding, following up, etc.) and became very frustrated if he will not use the appropriate sites. This is the reason for this post to list the best freelance marketplace sites from my experiences and also to show how you can spot in notime a small site that will most certainly just make you loose time.

How do you know if a freelancer marketplace site will be good for you or not?
These are just general tips, and you can tweak them based on the profile of your job and the particularities of it and also based on your individual needs (like for ex. I would not like to work on a hourly rate, but I would like to find outgoing monthly paid projects, etc.)

Rule 1: NO ADS on the marked place site. If you see such a site that is full with ads (normally google ads) then it means that this is a small business. What are they trying to do? Are they trying to get their money from ads (don’t get me wrong many peoples have done great business based on ads, but here we are looking for a stable company that most certainly will intermediate the payments - and will hold the payments you get on projects, etc.). Personally if I see a freelance marketplace site with ads all over the place, I have finished my visit immediately.

Rule 2: Projects: see how many projects are available. Would you be interested in bidding on them? See the projects related to your own field (some sites might be good for one type of job - let’s say programmers, but not appropriate for others). On the projects look what is the average bid if that is pubic, or the award price for closed ones.

Rule 3: Providers: see what other peoples like you were able to accomplish. How many projects were they able to complete? How much money did they made on the site? This will also show the competition you will be facing and also the prices that the marketplace is normally awarding projects.

Rule 4: commissions? withdrawals methods? See if you can get the money you will be making to your own local account. What are the commissions you will pay?

Best Freelance Marketplace Sites

To help new freelancers (and maybe others also), I have compiled a list of best freelance marketplace sites. The list is sorted based on my own impressions. Feel free to comment on it if you think I have left something important out.

1. eLancehttp://www.elance.com/- paid monthly/yearly subscriptions to make bids.- commission for each project/payment (6.75% to 8.75%, with a minimum fee of $10 per project)- one free wire transfer per month

2. Guruhttp://www.guru.com/- free account (limited to 10 bids/month) with higher commissions than normal one- paid monthly/yearly subscriptions with 100bids/mo- many projects posted, but few get awarded

3. RentACoderhttp://www.rentacoder.com/- mostly for programmers- projects rated at smaller prices than elance/guru

4. GetAFreelancerhttp://www.getafreelancer.com/

5. ScriptLancehttp://www.scriptlance.com/

6. oDeskhttp://www.odesk.com/

7. GetACoderhttp://www.getacoder.com/

8. iFreelancehttp://www.ifreelance.com/

9. SoloGighttp://www.sologig.com/

10. ContractedWorkhttp://www.contractedwork.com/
For me personally only elance and guru have worked with good results, but maybe for other type of works other sites might be useful also. Others that I found ‘interesting’ but not very useful for me personally were oDesk (because of their hourly rate scheme but I haven’t found interesting projects) and Onforce (because of the onsite work provided that was the only one targeted towards that, but of course not useful for me either).
I will conclude with a list of what I consider smaller such sites (just so you can test my above tips ):

Elance is a great market place for professionals of all walks of life. Whether you are a writer or a designer, you can get some decent work trough Elance. Membership accounts range from FREE to $39.95/month for large businesses.

Elance charges a service fee of between 6.75 % - 8.75 % for paid jobs.

Guru is designed to service freelancers of all kinds and has a very active bulletin board. I’m a free member of Guru and so far I haven’t managed to score a job with them. I believe that it is probably better paying for membership if you are serious at scoring a decent writing job.

Guru offers FREE as well as paid memberships and they range from $29.95 to $99.95 per quarter. Once you get paid for a job well done, Guru takes between 5 % - 10 % commission.

ScriptLance is probably the most known website for freelancers all around the world. It is also the most notorious since most freelancers find work there first. Many freelancers sell themselves really cheap there just to get some work and this is damaging the whole industry.

I personally have had some great finds there but the secret is to stand out from the crowd. Don’t sell yourself short!ScriptLance is FREE for all and they take a 5 % commission on work paid to you.

oZLance is a freelance website focused to bring more connections to Australian and New Zealand professionals and connecting business owners with freelancers. The site is still very young but is also open to worldwide registration.

You can sign up for FREE and pay a small fee to get accredited if you want to for better exposure. There isn’t much traffic yet and you won’t find too many writing gigs, but having said this, there are the occasional bargains.

Freelance Writing is one of those sites to get lost in easily. They have a huge range of information and links leading to other related websites. Whenever I visit the site I find myself still browsing an hour later. So be warned!

Journalism Jobs is simply put a job website for many professionals around the world. Some are in house based and others allow you to work remote.

The best way to see whether there are suitable offers for your experience is to do a keyword search.

Get A Freelancer is similar to ScriptLance and again it is probably more so a good site for beginners in freelance writing since the money is mostly very bad. There is nothing wrong with writing for $5 an article when you first start out, but once you gain credibility and experience this is simply ridiculous.

Writer Lance (updated 21.January 2008 site is down and seemingly no longer available) is a new favorite of mine. There are plenty of job offers and they seem to pay a decent rate too. Registration is FREE and they charge you a 3 % fee of your income.

Suite 101 is an article/freelance site that invites freelance writers into their network. They claim to get 6 millions of views every month and will pay you a share of their income. What is great about Suite 101 is the fact that they have such a broad article gallery where you will find something to write about in your chosen field.

You Can sign up for FREE and start earning revenue straight away by writing great articles.

iFreelance is one of the best freelance websites because of the sheer amount of good paying jobs available. Membership levels vary between $ 3.91 - $ 6.58/month but that is all you pay. iFreelance doesn’t charge you a commission fee of your earnings. So fire away by applying for your dream jobs.

Helium is a freelance writers platform that lets you indulge into you craft. Possible income happens from being very active on the site and write a lot. Articles are voted by the active community and you can also compete for paid freelancing gigs.

Helium has a huge active reader and writer base and you can write about any topic you like.

1) http://www.rentacoder.com

Rentacoder is good place to find small to mid-sized projects for earning extra money. It also offers a rating system which can hurt or help you depending on your work.

2) http://odesk.com/

Odesk is a little bit different than the rest of the sites listed here. Instead of bidding on projects, you bid on hours. Employers can list the amount of hours/week and # of weeks they need out of a potential freelancer.

3) http://www.craigslist.com

Craigslist is great because there is no barrier to entry for either the employer or the potential freelancer/employee (it is also among the top sites on the Internet). This can also be a detriment because anyone with a computer can post a job listing.

4) http://programmermeetdesigner.com/

A unique website that provides an opportunity for programmers to meet and work with designers.

5) http://www.guru.com

Guru.com is a clean and professional website that has lots of large-scale projects. It also has a fairly high barrier to entry for the employers, which usually means better paying jobs.

Best freelance job sites

Freelancing is a great way to work from home. Freelancers do anything from writing to graphic design to computer programming. They are often hired by businesses (small and large) for a particular project. It’s a win- win situation.

The small business owner gets his website up and running, or his press release written without having to create a new position in his company to get the job done.
The Freelancer gets to do what he or she loves to do from home. The big question is how do the business owner and freelancer find each other? They do it through one of the freelance sites below.
On all five of these sites projects are posted and freelancers bid on how much they would charge for the work. It is up to the company / person posting the job to choose which freelancer they would like to work with.
